In 1850 Okhlopkov was founded as a professional drama theater, with a permanent troupe of actors. The first performances were held in the Noble Assembly. On November 2, 1967, The Council of Ministers of the RSFSR named the theater after the prominent Russian director Okhlopkov, whose theatrical career began in Irkutsk. In 1995 the theater building was declared a historical and cultural monument of federal importance.
