Old Elb Tunnel, Hamburg (must see)

The Old Elbe Tunnel, first opened in 1911, quickly became one of Hamburg’s great engineering achievements. Stretching 426 meters, or about 1,398 feet, it runs roughly 24 meters, or 80 feet, beneath the surface of the River Elbe. At the time, it was the first river tunnel of its kind on the European continent.

The tunnel links central Hamburg with the docks and shipyards on the south side of the river. When it opened, it made daily life much easier for the tens of thousands of workers who needed to cross the Elbe to reach their jobs.

Building it was no simple task. The tunnel lies below the river’s water table, so construction had to be carried out under pressure to prevent water from flooding the works.

Today, pedestrians and cyclists can use the tunnel around the clock. Vehicles are also allowed during certain daytime hours. Large historic lifts carry people, bicycles, and vehicles down to the tunnel level.

As you walk through, take a closer look at the tiled walls. Many of the original decorations are still here, including images inspired by the river, such as fish, crabs, and other marine life. The tunnel has also been used for art exhibitions and even hosts the unusual Elbtunnel Marathon.

The Old Elbe Tunnel is worth visiting not only for its engineering history, but also for the experience of walking beneath one of Hamburg’s busiest waterways. Best of all, it is free for pedestrians.

Once you reach the south side, step outside and look back across the river. From here, you can enjoy excellent views of the Elbe, Hamburg’s harbor, and the city skyline beyond.
