Open Garden, Brno
The Open Garden in Brno is an innovative educational and consulting center. The facility is distinguished by its integration of sustainable design and environmental education, creating a unique space that merges architecture with nature.
Designed by architects Adam Halíř and Ondřej Hofmeister, the centerpiece of the Open Garden is a rectangular, flat-roofed building that adheres to passive-house energy standards, making it the first of its kind in the Czech Republic. The building is an open structure, seamlessly blending with its surroundings through the use of a green roof and a facade adorned with climbing plants. This design not only promotes energy efficiency but also contributes to the local micro-climate by enhancing cooling and humidification.
The garden, an integral part of the Open Garden complex, was designed by architect Lucie Komendová. It features a variety of plots and 12 artistic installations that symbolize natural elements and phenomena. This space serves multiple purposes: it is a relaxing retreat, a hub for environmental education, and a venue for social events. The garden also incorporates an educational trail that meanders through the sloping terrain, showcasing diverse plant species and offering an interactive learning experience.
The Open Garden is more than just a green space; it is a center for learning and community engagement. The complex includes the Four Elements teaching garden and the former Boromej Gardens, where visitors can learn about the agricultural cycle, from soil preparation to food production. The facility offers a range of courses, school programs, and the opportunity to host events such as conferences, weddings, and corporate gatherings.
