Oral Roberts University, Tulsa

Oral Roberts University (ORU) is a private evangelical Christian university located in Tulsa. Founded in 1963 by charismatic preacher Oral Roberts, the institution opened in 1965 with just 300 students and seven buildings and has since grown into one of the most influential Christian universities in the world. It now enrolls around 5,000 students from all 50 U.S. states and more than 100 nations, offering over 70 undergraduate programs and 20 graduate degrees across six colleges.

ORU is known for its “Whole Person” education model, aiming to develop Spirit-empowered leaders in mind, body, and spirit. The university places a strong emphasis on spiritual growth, rooted in a divine mandate that inspired Roberts to train students to “go where My light is dim… to the uttermost bounds of the earth.”

The 385-acre Tulsa campus is as distinctive as the university’s mission. Architect Frank Wallace’s futuristic, art-deco-inspired designs gave rise to ORU’s most iconic landmarks, including the 200-foot Prayer Tower-a symbol of the school’s commitment to faith-completed in 1967 despite early controversy. Other key buildings include Christ's Chapel, the Howard Auditorium, the Mabee Center arena, and the Learning Resources Center with its soaring columns.

Accredited by the Higher Learning Commission since 1971, ORU also holds accreditation from the Association of Theological Schools. It once housed the O.W. Coburn School of Law (1979–1986), whose library was later transferred to help establish Regent University’s law school.

ORU continues to stand as a global, multicultural hub where students come not just to preserve their faith, but to grow in it-preparing to make an impact far beyond Tulsa.
