Oratorio di San Giobbe (Oratory of St. Job), Venice
Located in a secluded square filled with cats, the modest Oratory of Saint Job holds a unique charm. Originally built in an early Gothic style, the place of worship underwent modifications in the 1470s by Pietro Lombardo, who introduced Renaissance elements, including the saints depicted above the portal. The bell tower, completed around the same time, boasts elegant Istrian stone mullioned windows and a striking Gothic structure.
As you approach the entrance, you'll notice the decorative motifs on the door jambs gradually transforming as they ascend. Thorny bushes give way to vibrant flowers and fruits, accompanied by animals enjoying their nourishment. Each motif represents Christian allegories, culminating with the eagle, a symbol of rebirth and resurrection. Adorning the arch are statues of three distinguished saints associated with the Franciscan spirit: Saint Bernardino of Siena, Saint Louis of Toulouse, and Saint Anthony of Padua.
Upon entering, the interior reveals an intriguing asymmetry. The left wall boasts numerous chapels, while the right side features a linear arrangement with four altars. This design asymmetry arises from the church's connection to the adjacent monastery, which leaned against its right side.
Notably, the Martini chapel, located second on the left, showcases evident Tuscan influences and is adorned with glazed terracotta in the style of Della Robbia. Unfortunately, the altarpieces by Giovanni Bellini and Vittore Carpaccio, once housed in the church, were removed during Napoleon's suppression of the San Giobbe monastery. These valuable artworks now find their place on display in the Accademia gallery.

Jewish Ghetto Tour
Founded in 1516, the Jewish Ghetto of Venice earns its grim little footnote in European history as the first place officially designated as a “ghetto.” It began as a Venetian compromise with sharp edges: the Papacy urged to expel the Jews, while Venice-never one to waste a useful population-chose to confine them to a small island.

Venice Introduction Walking Tour
Venice is a city that learned early how to live with water-and, ultimately, how to profit from it. Built across hundreds of small islands in a shallow lagoon in the northern Adriatic, it runs without roads, relying solely on canals and bridges. Although the lagoon itself formed thousands of years ago, it was inhabited mainly by fishermen up until the 5th century AD, when waves of barbarian... view more
