Orpheum Theater, Omaha

Orpheum Theater is a historic performing arts venue whose history began with the Creighton Theater, which opened as a vaudeville house in 1892. The original theater later joined the Orpheum vaudeville circuit. Growing demand led to its reconstruction and expansion in 1927, producing the building that largely survives today.

Designed by theater architect John Eberson, the new Orpheum cost about $2 million and opened with a Wurlitzer pipe organ. After decades of vaudeville and film exhibition, it closed in 1971, was restored, and reopened for live performances in 1975. The 1927 theater is known for its richly decorated vaudeville and movie-palace interior. Eberson used French Renaissance and other European influences, expressed through ornamental plasterwork, gilded details, murals, chandeliers, stairways, balconies, and elaborate ceiling decoration. The main auditorium, now called Slosburg Hall, seats about 2,600 people. Renovations after Omaha Performing Arts assumed management in 2002 improved seating, the stage, dressing rooms, acoustics, rigging, sound systems, accessibility, and backstage facilities while preserving the historic decorative character. Today, the Orpheum is operated by Omaha Performing Arts and serves as its principal venue for touring Broadway productions. Its schedule also includes concerts, comedy, dance, family shows, and special performances.

The building reflects changing forms of American entertainment, from vaudeville and silent films to cinema and touring stage productions. Visitors attending performances can also experience architectural features preserved from the 1927 reconstruction, combining live entertainment with early-20th-century theater design.
