Our Lady of Mount Carmel Convent, Lagos

Our Lady of Mount Carmel Convent, Lagos

The Our Lady of Mount Carmel Convent (Convento de Nossa Senhora do Carmo) in Lagos is a historic Roman Catholic convent and church complex built in the Baroque style. The convent was initially established in 1463 under the initiative of Padre Cristavao Dias, making it one of the earliest convents in Portugal. Situated outside the fortified walls of old Lagos, the structure suffered severe damage in the 1755 Lisbon earthquake and underwent multiple restorations, the most recently completed in 2004.

Over its long history, the convent has been associated with different names. While commonly referred to as the Convent of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, historical records also indicate its designation as the Convent of Our Lady of Help (Convento da Nossa Senhora do Socorro). Initially built to house the Carmelite Order, the convent was home to several male Carmelites of the Ancient Observance, also known as the Order of the Brothers of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

The convent endured destruction and reconstruction, suffering major damage in the 1722 and 1755 earthquakes, as noted by historian Moreira de Mendonça. After religious orders were dissolved in 1834, the Cabrita family acquired the property and restored much of it. Private religious services continued in the chapel, and an annual procession was established to honor Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

In 1867, under national decrees concerning the possessions of dissolved religious institutions, the Ministry of Finances transferred the convent’s documents and records to the National Archive of Torre do Tombo in Lisbon. Some of these materials were later returned to their custodial agency in 1894. Despite its turbulent past, the convent remains an important historical and religious site in Lagos, offering visitors a glimpse into the rich legacy of the Carmelite Order in Portugal.

Lagos is one of the oldest towns in the Algarve, with a history shaped by its coastal position, maritime activity, and strategic value. Its name is commonly traced to the Latin Lacobriga, itself likely derived from earlier Celtic roots: lac, meaning “lake” or “lagoon,” and briga, meaning “fortified place” or “hill settlement.”

Lagos Coastline Walk

Lagos’s coastline has shaped the town’s character as much as its streets and walls, acting for centuries as both gateway and boundary. The natural harbour formed by the Bensafrim River and the chain of rocky headlands to the east created a sheltered maritime zone that defined how the town engaged with the Atlantic ocean.
