Palais Schonborn-Batthyany, Vienna
Although commonly referred to as Palais Schonborn in Vienna, the official name of this historical edifice is Palais Schonborn-Batthyány, deriving its nomenclature from the Croatian statesman and military leader, Adam Graf Batthyány. In 1698, Batthyány acquired the property and oversaw the construction of today's palace, a project guided by the architectural plans of Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach between 1699 and 1706.
Around 1740, ownership transitioned to Friedrich Karl von Schönborn, who embarked on an interior redesign that incorporated furnishings and artworks from the Schonborn Garden Palace in Alservorstadt, another Schonborn property. In 1801, all collections, including notable paintings like Rembrandt's "The Blinding of Samson," and a valuable library comprising approximately 18,000 volumes, were relocated here from the Garden Palace.
Regrettably, the palace endured significant damage during the Second World War but underwent restoration, completing in 1960. The Rococo embellishments within the first-floor representative chambers remain intact, while the façade boasts intricate figurative ornamentation. Ownership of the building is retained by the Austrian Schönborn Line from Weyerburg and Göllersdorf.
Today, the Red Salon of Palais Schonborn serves as the venue for the Vienna Baroque Orchestra's baroque concerts. This impressive concert hall promises an unforgettable evening filled with virtuoso musicians and exceptional opera singers. Immerse yourself in a world of courtly tradition and exquisite classical music, and explore the traditional and most enchanting facets of Vienna. The Vienna Baroque Orchestra's performance lasts for 1 hour and 45 minutes, including a 15-minute intermission, featuring a diverse repertoire of popular baroque classical music.
