Parcul Copou (Copou Park), Iasi

Parcul Copou is one of the oldest public parks in Romania and an important cultural landmark connected with the region’s intellectual and literary history. Created in the nineteenth century, the park became a popular promenade for walks, social gatherings, and cultural events. Its main alleys, shaded by mature trees, still preserve the atmosphere of a historic public garden.

The park is closely associated with Romanian literature, especially through the Eminescu Linden Tree. Believed to be more than 500 years old, the tree survived after its old trunk decayed because new roots grew down through the hollow interior and reached the soil. Local tradition links it with Mihai Eminescu, Veronica Micle, and Ion Creangă, turning it into a place of literary memory. Nearby, a monument to Eminescu recalls the park’s strong link with Romanian literature.

Another notable landmark is the Obelisk of Lions, erected in 1834 to commemorate the Organic Regulations. A legend links the Obelisk to a sealed document inside it, while nearby busts recall the Junimea cultural circle.
