Peabody College of Education and Human Development, Nashville

Peabody College of Education and Human Development, Nashville

Peabody College of Education and Human Development was established in 1875 as a result of the University of Nashville's division into two distinct educational entities. One was the University School of Nashville, a preparatory school, while the other was initially known as Peabody Normal School but later adopted the name George Peabody College for Teachers. In 1979, Peabody merged with Vanderbilt University and has consistently been recognized as the leading graduate school of education in the United States, as indicated by its high rankings in the U.S. News & World Report graduate school listings for the years 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013.

Following 1911, Peabody College was situated directly across from Vanderbilt University's campus. It subsequently established an affiliation with Vanderbilt University and is currently referred to as the Peabody College of Education and Human Development at Vanderbilt University. This institution's 50-acre campus, comprising 22 main buildings, received recognition as a National Historic Landmark in 1965.

By the late 1970s, Peabody College faced significant financial challenges, which led to two primary options: negotiating a merger with Vanderbilt or complete closure. Ultimately, the decision was made to merge with Vanderbilt in 1979. In 2008, Peabody also became the location for "The Commons," a residential facility for all first-year Vanderbilt students.
