Pentecostal St. Mark's Church, Dublin

One of Dublin's trio of new parish churches, Saint Mark's broke ground in 1729, making it the eldest standing structure on Pearse Street. Nestled within a cluster of important parish buildings, it formed an integral part of the community alongside a school, a widow's almshouse, and a soup kitchen.

Despite its unadorned exterior, the church has several distinctive features such as its sandstone rusticated door and a Diocletian window facing west, contrasting with a limestone Venetian window facing east. The skillful integration of dressed limestone and granite adds a subtle interplay of textures and hues to the otherwise modest calp limestone walls. Positioned slightly back from Pearse Street, the churchyard, complemented by 19th-century cast-iron railings, enhances its picturesque setting.

Since 1987, Saint Mark’s has served as a Pentecostal church, upholding its longstanding legacy as a sacred space. Notably, it holds a special connection to literary history as the site where Oscar Wilde received his baptismal rites in 1854.
