Peterson Air and Space Museum, Colorado Springs

The Peterson Air and Space Museum, situated within Peterson Space Force Base in Colorado Springs, Colorado, is a dedicated institution that delves into the historical narratives of the Air Defense Command, Aerospace Defense Command, and Air Force Space Command. This museum traces its origins back to the establishment of the North American Aerospace Defense Command Visitor Center in 1975 under the leadership of Col. Donald Parson.

Visitors to the museum are welcomed through the original terminal building of the Colorado Springs Airport, constructed in 1941 for the Colorado Springs Municipal Airport. Inside, you will encounter a modest collection of exhibits primarily centered on the base's involvement in World War II, particularly its role as a training facility for the 14th Photographic Reconnaissance Squadron. Notably, there's a tribute to 1st Lt. Edward J. Peterson, the namesake of the base, who lost his life in a tragic crash. Additionally, this building houses an introductory screening room and a museum store.

Exiting from the rear of the terminal building leads you to the Air Park, where the majority of the museum's aircraft are proudly displayed. Among them, the EC-121 Warning Star stands out as the only aircraft available for guided tours. Adjacent to the Air Park, you'll find a Memorial dedicated to recipients of the Medal of Honor.

Within the museum's grounds, there are two hangars that have undergone transformation into additional museum facilities. One of these hangars, once utilized by the Broadmoor hotel for aircraft storage and transportation services, now serves as an archival and administrative space for museum personnel. Regrettably, this particular building remains closed to the public, although there have been proposals to repurpose it into more exhibit space. The other hangar, originally employed for public transportation by the original municipal airport, currently houses the majority of exhibits offered at the museum.
