Petrovsky Passage, Moscow

Petrovsky Passage is a historic shopping arcade constructed between 1903 and 1906. Commissioned by wealthy property owner and entrepreneur Vera Firsanova, the building was designed by architect Sergei Kalugin with the participation of Boris Freidenberg.

Originally known as Firsanovsky Passage, it opened on February 20, 1906, and contained more than 50 shops, including several prominent retailers of the late Russian Empire. The building is organized around two parallel, three-level shopping galleries covered by high glazed roofs supported by metal structures. The galleries are connected by bridges and passages, creating an open interior in which natural light reaches the different levels. Its architecture combines classical forms with elements associated with the early twentieth century, while arched openings, decorative railings, balconies, and the large glass vaults give the interior its distinctive appearance. After the 1917 Revolution, the passage was nationalized in 1918 and renamed Petrovsky Passage. During the Soviet period, parts of the building were used for exhibitions, offices, workshops, clubs, and other institutions, although retail activity later returned. By the early 1960s it operated as a branch of the TsUM department store.

Following later renovation and redevelopment, Petrovsky Passage again became an upscale shopping center. Today, boutiques and other retail businesses occupy its historic galleries, while the glazed roofs, bridges, and multi-level façades preserve the character of the original early twentieth-century shopping arcade.
