Tretyakov Drive, Moscow

Tretyakov Drive, or Tretyakovsky Proyezd, is a short commercial passage created in 1870–1871 on the initiative of merchant brothers Pavel and Sergei Tretyakov. They financed the project to establish a new route through a densely built commercial quarter and connect two existing streets.
The brothers belonged to the merchant family whose important art collection later formed the basis of the Tretyakov Gallery. A defining architectural feature is the decorative Russian Revival gateway, designed by architect Alexander Kaminsky, who was married to the Tretyakovs’ sister. Its design incorporates pointed arches, patterned brickwork, ornamental details, and forms inspired by medieval Russian architecture. Kaminsky also designed several commercial buildings lining the passage, creating a coordinated architectural ensemble. The narrow proportions, richly decorated façades, and monumental entrance distinguish Tretyakovsky Proyezd from the larger streets surrounding it. The passage has maintained its commercial function since the nineteenth century, although the businesses occupying its buildings have changed substantially. Today, the restored premises contain mainly luxury boutiques and international fashion brands, continuing the area’s association with high-end retail. Visitors can walk through the passage while examining its historic façades, decorative brickwork, shopfronts, and gateway.
These surviving architectural elements provide a clear example of how Russian Revival design was applied to a late nineteenth-century commercial development.
