Pfander Lookout, Bregenz

Pfander Lookout, Bregenz

Pfänder Lookout rises 1,064 meters above sea level on Pfänder. Although modest in height compared to higher Alpine peaks, its position directly above Lake Constance gives it unusual prominence. The mountain is closely linked to Bregenz and can be reached by hiking trails, a mountain road, or the Pfänderbahn, which carries visitors to the summit in about six minutes.

From the observation area, the view stretches across Austria, Germany, and Switzerland. On exceptionally clear days, as many as 240 Alpine peaks can be identified along the horizon. This wide panorama explains why the lake area is often described as a “three-country” setting. At the same time, it is also known as a “four-country region,” since Liechtenstein lies nearby and can be seen from certain points on the mountain.

Next to the mountain station, the Alpine Wildlife Park (Alpenwildpark) presents ibex, mouflon, deer, and wild boar in spacious enclosures and is open free of charge. Marked walking paths circle the summit, and a restaurant provides views over the lake basin. The lookout is accessible throughout the year, though the cable car usually closes for a short maintenance period in late autumn, typically in November.
