Valley Station Cable Car, Bregenz

Valley Station Cable Car, Bregenz (must see)

The Valley Station Cable Car is the starting point for the ride up Pfänder, the mountain above the lakeshore. It opened on 20 March 1927 and was designed by local architect Willibald Braun. The line was Austria’s third passenger ropeway, following the Raxseilbahn and the Feuerkogel cable car. It was built during a period of growing mountain tourism, when new transport technology made higher terrain easier to reach.

Braun, a key figure in regional modernism, designed the station with a clear and practical concept. The building balances function and architectural order rather than appearing purely industrial. Much of the original structure is preserved, and the valley station is protected as a historic monument. A small museum inside explains the cable car’s history, while the 1927 architectural character remains visible despite later technical modernisation.

The cable car rises from about 419 metres above sea level to the mountain station at 1,022 metres, covering a height difference of roughly 605 metres. The actual summit of Pfänder reaches 1,064 metres and lies slightly above the station. The ascent takes around six minutes. During the ride, views gradually open across Lake Constance, nearby towns, and the surrounding Alpine landscape.

A major upgrade in 1994–1995 replaced the original smaller cabins with modern 80-person panoramic cars, increasing capacity to about 600 passengers per hour. At the top, visitors find walking trails, cycling paths, restaurants, and an Alpine wildlife park with ibex, deer, and marmots. Viewing platforms provide wide panoramas across the lake and toward the mountain ranges of Austria, Germany, and Switzerland.
