Piata Unirii (Union Square), Timisoara

Union Square is the oldest historical square in Timișoara. Renamed in 1919 to commemorate the entry of Romanian troops into the city, symbolizing the union of Banat with Romania, its history traces back to significant events of conquest and cultural shifts. Once called Losonczy Square after Count István Losonczy, its transformation reflects the evolution of Timișoara itself.

This square, spanning 150 by 110 meters, serves as a testament to Baroque architecture, housing some of Timișoara's most prized landmarks. From the Roman Catholic Dome to the Serbian Orthodox Cathedral, the Baroque Palace, and the Plague Column, each edifice tells a story of the city's past.

Originally part of the Turkish fortress, Union Square underwent a metamorphosis in the 18th century when it was expanded and reshaped into its current form. Over time, it became the epicenter of commerce, with markets bustling until 1969. In the late 20th century, architect Șerban Sturdza's Neo-Baroque redesign breathed new life into the square, blending modernity with historical charm.
