Pines Garden, Dover

Pines Garden is a charming estate near Dover, featuring a house surrounded by a large, organically maintained garden. The garden boasts a variety of attractions, including a waterfall with an adjoining lake, a grass labyrinth, and an organic kitchen garden growing around 40 species of fruits and vegetables. Managed organically since 2002, the garden reflects the Trust's commitment to environmental harmony, employing recycling, composting, and natural predators for pest control. It also houses a striking statue of Winston Churchill by Oscar Nemon and showcases projects from contemporary artists.

The site includes Saint Margaret's Museum and The Pines Garden Tea Room. The museum hosts rotating exhibits on local history, such as Saint Margaret's role in World War II and Noel Coward, a former resident. Additional displays explore the region’s natural history and environmental heritage.

The Calyx Centre, constructed on the former site of the garden’s original bungalow, is a groundbreaking venue. Claimed to be Europe’s first carbon-negative conference building, it features a grass roof and adheres to Passivhaus standards. Designed collaboratively by Helionix Designs (architect Alistair Gould), Cameron Taylor (part of Scott Wilson Group), and Conker Conservation, it incorporates innovative elements like pneumatic rammed chalk walls up to 650mm thick. The Bay Trust and its designers are part of the Carbon Free Group. Available for private hire, the venue is licensed for weddings and other ceremonies, making it a unique and eco-friendly event space.
