Plaza de Santo Domingo (Santo Domingo Square), Cartagena (must see)

Santo Domingo Square is one of the liveliest and most atmospheric squares in Cartagena’s Old Town. Surrounded by colourful Spanish colonial buildings with elegant balconies and red-tiled roofs, it takes its name from the Church of Santo Domingo and its adjoining convent, which stand prominently along one side.

The church and convent have their origins in the 16th century, when Dominican friars established themselves in Cartagena. Construction proved lengthy and difficult, stretching over several decades. Today, the church is one of the oldest in the city, and its orange-yellow façade, massive arched entrance and distinctive bell tower provide an impressive backdrop to the square. According to a popular local legend, the Devil once tried to destroy the church by jumping onto its tower but failed to bring it down.

The square also has a darker history. During the colonial period, it was reportedly associated with the Spanish Inquisition and public punishments, in sharp contrast to its cheerful atmosphere today.

One of the square’s most photographed attractions is Gertrude, a large bronze sculpture of a reclining nude by celebrated Colombian artist Fernando Botero. Created in the artist’s unmistakable style, the figure displays the exaggerated, rounded proportions for which Botero became famous. According to a popular tradition, touching the sculpture is supposed to bring good luck in love. Look closely and you’ll notice that parts of its bronze surface have been polished by countless visitors.

Today, Santo Domingo Square is surrounded by restaurants, cafés, shops and street vendors, with outdoor tables spreading across much of the open space. Musicians, dancers and other performers frequently contribute to its lively Caribbean atmosphere, particularly in the evening.

Take time to explore the narrow streets and alleyways branching off the square, where colourful façades and flower-filled balconies create some of Cartagena’s most picturesque scenes.
