Queen Victoria Statue, Cape Town

Queen Victoria Statue, Cape Town

The statue of Queen Victoria in Cape Town is a significant piece of public art that commemorates the reign of one of Britain's most notable monarchs. Unveiled on January 21, 1890, by Lord Loch, this sculpture was created to mark the first Jubilee of Queen Victoria's reign. It stands prominently in the Gardens enclosure, directly facing the Legislative Council entrance to the House of Parliament, a building dating back to 1875. This statue not only serves as a memorial but also as a symbol of the British Empire's reach and influence during the 19th century.

The funding for this statue represents a collaborative effort between the Town Council of Cape Town, which contributed £500, the local public who also raised £500, and the government, which provided the pedestal made of Paarl granite. This collective endeavor underscores the local community's involvement and the significance of commemorating Queen Victoria's reign in the heart of Cape Town.

The work of Thomas Brock, the sculptor behind this statue, plays a crucial role in the imperial iconography of the British Empire. Statues of Queen Victoria, such as Brock's in Cape Town, symbolized the connection between remote governments and the central imperial administration. Brock, associated with the New Sculpture movement, brought a new elegance and vitality to British sculpture, drawing inspiration from Renaissance and Baroque influences.

Despite facing criticism and a decline in reputation towards the end of his life, Brock's significance was reassessed and recognized, especially after the rediscovery of a biography by his son in 1989. Scholars like John Sankey have since reevaluated his contributions, highlighting his numerous commissions of Queen Victoria, including the monument in Victoria Square, Birmingham, and the Victoria Memorial outside Buckingham Palace.
