Reformed Church, Cluj-Napoca

Reformed Church, Cluj-Napoca

The Reformed Church blends elements of Gothic and neoclassical styles. Designed by architect Georg Winkler and constructed between 1821 and 1859, its imposing façade adorned with columns, composite capitals, and intricate detailing is a testament to its grandeur. Nestled in the heart of Transylvania, this church holds a special place in the region's cultural heritage.

Dating back to the late 15th century, this church is one of the most valuable Gothic structures in Transylvania. Its massive yet elegant design, characterized by a single nave construction without supporting pillars, reflects the architectural preferences of its time. Standing at 34 meters long, 15 meters wide, and with walls soaring up to 19 meters in height, it commands attention and reverence from visitors.

Inside, the church houses a treasure trove of historical artifacts, including fifteenth-century furniture crafted by skilled artisans from Bistrița and a Rococo organ dating back to 1766, the second largest of its kind in Romania. The church's cloister, erected in 1651, once served as a hub of academic activity, hosting a university college led by the renowned scholar János Apáczai Csere.

Noteworthy features of the church include a rich collection of coats of arms belonging to Transylvanian nobles, meticulously curated by pastor Gergely Herepei in the nineteenth century, and a monument honoring the last voivode of Transylvania, Mihai Apafi I, crafted by Károly Kós in 1942.

Outside, visitors are greeted by a replica of the iconic equestrian statue of Saint George slaying the dragon, a symbol of bravery and valor. Originally sculpted in 1373, the original monument now resides in the Prague Fortress, serving as a testament to the church's enduring historical significance.
