Rocky Steps, Philadelphia
If these 72 stone steps look familiar, it’s because you’ve seen them before—probably with a soundtrack building in the background. This is the famous staircase of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, better known worldwide as the “Rocky Steps,” thanks to Rocky, the movie character. Ever since that scene, people have been running up them, arms in the air, chasing their own small moment of victory.
And that moment wasn’t just cinematic. It echoed the real-life story of Sylvester Stallone, who went from foster care to sleeping in a bus station, holding onto a script that no one wanted—until suddenly, everyone did, and he insisted on playing the lead himself. Not a bad underdog story to match the one on screen...
The steps themselves weren’t even planned. The crew stumbled upon them during a late-night location search, working with a tight budget and even tighter options. Boxer Joe Frazier, who appears briefly in the film, later claimed the idea drew from his own training routines—though Hollywood didn’t exactly send a thank-you note.
Originally, Stallone imagined Rocky running up these steps carrying his dog, Butkus. That idea lasted until someone tried lifting the dog—the large bull mastiff proved too heavy for the task,—so the plan was abandoned. Still, the view from the top—stretching over Eakins Oval, the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, and all the way to Philadelphia City Hall—was reason enough to keep the scene.
Three decades later, in Rocky Balboa, Stallone finally got his wish—this time carrying a smaller dog, named Punchy, much more manageable. By then, the steps had already taken on a life of their own. During the unveiling of the Rocky statue just below, Mayor John Street called them one of the city’s top attractions—and, in a neat twist, declared Stallone, a native New Yorker, Philadelphia’s favorite adopted son.
So, now, the question is… are you walking up these steps—or running?
