Romulus Vuia Ethnographic Park, Cluj-Napoca

Romulus Vuia Ethnographic Park, Cluj-Napoca

Established in 1929 by Romulus Vuia, the Romulus Vuia Ethnographic Park stands as Romania's inaugural open-air museum, recognized as the first of its kind in the country. Initially part of the Ardeal Museum of Ethnography, the park was officially recognized in 1932 under the Law organizing the Transylvanian Museum of Ethnography and the National Park in Cluj.

Spanning an initial area of 75 hectares, the park was meticulously curated to embody rural life through the relocation of authentic farmsteads and structures. However, the tumultuous period of the Second World War saw significant destruction, with only a fraction of the original buildings surviving upon the park's return to Cluj in 1945.

In 1956, a restructured thematic plan devised by Teodor Onisor and Valer Butura delineated the park into four distinct sectors, focusing on regional farmsteads, peasant workshops, ethnobotanical displays, and ethno-zoological exhibitions. Despite subsequent challenges leading to alterations in its organization, the park continues to showcase an array of traditional peasant life, with exhibits ranging from technical installations and workshops to fully furnished rural households.

Notable among the park's offerings are three well-preserved wooden churches, including those from Cizer, Chiraleş, and Petrindu, each dating back several centuries and serving as landmarks within the museum's picturesque setting.
