Sacrario Militare dei Caduti Oltremare (War Memorial of the Fallen Overseas), Bari

The War Memorial of the Fallen Overseas serves as the final resting place for approximately 75,000 Italian soldiers who died in lands such as the Balkans, North and East Africa, Greece, and other territories during the First and Second World Wars, as well as colonial campaigns. It was inaugurated on 10 December 1967, designed by architect-engineer Paolo Caccia Dominioni and commissioned by the Italian Ministry of Defense.

The structure is thoughtfully laid out across two levels, set within a peaceful park. The ground floor houses a war museum featuring uniforms, weapons, photographs, personal effects, documents, and archival film projections that narrate Italy’s wartime history. Meanwhile, the upper level contains the central cloister where the fallen rest in solemn memorial. Notably, the crypt also bears a copper plaque bearing the Latin inscription “Together with our blood, we also gave our name to the Fatherland”.

The outdoor memorial space-the “park of remembrance”-is enriched with historic artifacts such as artillery pieces, tanks, symbolic chains, and fragments reminiscent of the former Tripoli memorial entrance. A prominent bell, inscribed with “Though defeated, we live”, rings nine times at sunset to honor the fallen.

Today, the memorial hosts solemn commemorative ceremonies, especially on national observances like April 25 (Liberation Day) and November 4 (National Unity and Armed Forces Day), often attended by civil and military dignitaries.

American novelist Jeffery Deaver usually spins tales of murder and intrigue, yet even he paused in Bari long enough to swap suspense for admiration, calling it the “gem of Italy’s Adriatic coast.”

Gems, of course, take time to form-and Bari’s sparkle was earned over millennia. Its earliest name, Barion, is thought to derive from Illyrian roots, describing a settlement by the sea. By the...  view more
