Saint Bruno des Chartreux, Lyon

Saint Bruno des Chartreux, Lyon

Saint Bruno des Chartreux Church in Lyon is the city's only remaining Baroque church and holds great architectural significance. This bright and airy building was constructed specifically for the Carthusian monks, under a Royal Decree, and its development unfolded in two major stages across a span of 250 years, reflecting a rich history and a gradual evolution in design.

The initial phase of construction spanned a century, from 1590 to 1690. During this period, key elements such as the choir, sacristy, and monks' cells were established, laying the foundational structure of the church. The subsequent phase in the 18th century saw the addition of the transept, nave, and side chapels, further enhancing the church's grandeur. Notably, in the 19th century, the chapels and facade underwent renovations, which contributed to the church's current aesthetic.

One of the church's notable features is Munet’s arch, situated between the choir and the crossing. The arch houses statues sculpted by Sarasin in 1628, representing Saint Bruno and John the Baptist. The choir area, adorned with Rococo-style stalls, is illuminated by five windows, creating a serene and reflective ambiance. The church also boasts one of Lyon's finest double keyboard organs, adding to its musical heritage.

The pulpit, crafted in the form of a bronze eagle with outspread wings, symbolizes the Word of God. This element stands on a column intricately decorated with carved vines, grapes, and a dove at the base, epitomizing the church's attention to symbolic and artistic details.

Another significant feature is the altar, masterfully built by Servandoni. It showcases a magnificent ciborium composed of marble columns, wooden capitals, and a globe and cross made of copper, covered in gold leaf, reflecting the church's opulence and artistic richness.

The dome over the crossing is adorned with eight oval windows and four medallions, each representing one of the four Evangelists, contributing to the church's religious and artistic narrative. The nave features an arched vault with a distinctive frieze alternating between a rose and a dove. Flanking the nave, four arches on each side lead to the eight side chapels, integrating the church's architectural elements seamlessly.
