Saint John's Chapel, Monterey
Saint John's Chapel in Del Monte, a parish of the El Camino Real Episcopal Diocese in Monterey, California, was established in 1891. Originally, Saint John's Chapel catered to visitors of the Hotel Del Monte, situated in a sprawling 126-acre resort developed by notable railroad entrepreneurs. Charles Crocker, a key business magnate, donated the land for the chapel. His daughter, Hattie Crocker Alexander, along with Emma Rutherford Crocker, her future sister-in-law, played significant roles in the chapel's planning and construction, which began in 1890.
Saint John's Chapel is a one-story Late Victorian Shingle Style building, covering 2,329 square feet. It features a 110-foot-high steeple and bell tower and was consecrated on June 14, 1891, by Suffragan Bishop William Ford Nichols of the California Diocese. The chapel was designed by architect Ernest Coxhead, known for his work in California, particularly in the 'First Bay Tradition' that emphasizes harmony with the environment, the use of natural materials like redwood and shingles, and a blend of modern construction with historical elements, which is reflected in the Shingle Style exterior walls.
In 1903, President Theodore Roosevelt attended services here. The chapel has since hosted weddings for celebrities such as Brian Aherne and Joan Fontaine in 1939, and Brooke Shields and Andre Agassi in 1997. Following the Naval Postgraduate School's relocation to the former hotel site, the chapel's congregation expanded to include military personnel, locals, and visitors.
The Saint John's Chapel was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 21, 2020.
