Saint Matthieu Church, Montpellier

Saint Matthieu Church, Montpellier

The Saint Matthieu Church (Église Saint-Matthieu) stands as one of the oldest religious structures in Montpellier, embodying centuries of history and art. Originally constructed in 1624 as a Dominican Chapel, the church is renowned for its intricate interior furnishings, many of which date back to the seventeenth century. These precious artifacts, including altarpieces and paintings, have been meticulously preserved over the centuries, offering a glimpse into the church’s storied past.

The building has undergone several transformations since its inception. The first church on this site was destroyed in 1568, and rebuilt in 1617, only to be demolished once again in 1626. The present-day Saint Matthieu Church, erected shortly thereafter, features a stunning Corinthian facade that was added in 1829, giving the structure its distinct architectural character.

Although no longer a working church, Saint Matthieu remains a cherished monument of sacred art and history. The church’s doors are typically closed to the public, but an exception is made each year on the feast day of Saint Matthieu. During this annual celebration, the church opens its doors, hosting a special ceremony that draws both locals and visitors.

With its richly adorned interior, historical furnishings, and fascinating evolution through time, Saint Matthieu Church stands as a testament to Montpellier’s religious and cultural heritage.
