Salvation Army Citadel, Blackpool

Salvation Army Citadel, Blackpool

The Salvation Army Citadel in Blackpool stands as a distinctive landmark where civic heritage meets compassionate outreach. Located at the corner of Raikes Parade and Church Street, the building was originally constructed between 1904 and 1905 to house the Raikes Road Technical School, later becoming Blackpool Grammar School. Designed by the architectural firm Potts, Son, and Hennings, the building exemplifies the Baroque style with its striking red-brick façade, grey terracotta dressings, slate roof, and dramatic copper domes. A standout feature is the three-story southwest tower, crowned with an octagonal lantern and copper dome, lending the structure an air of dignified grandeur.

Since 1981, the building has served as the Salvation Army Citadel, a Grade II listed property recognized for its architectural and historical importance. The Salvation Army’s presence in Blackpool, however, stretches back to 1884, long before the building became its base. Historically, the Citadel on Coronation Street was a hub of religious and social activity, especially during the town’s bustling summer seasons, when open-air services and processional marches were a common sight along the Promenade.

Today, the Blackpool Citadel continues that legacy of community-centered service. It operates as a Christian church and social mission, offering worship, support, and practical aid. Programs like the Bridge Project, supporting those affected by homelessness for over 20 years, alongside family-friendly initiatives such as free toddler groups, embody the Salvation Army’s commitment to serving the whole person-spiritually and materially. In 2024, the Citadel celebrated 140 years of service, marking its enduring role as both a faith-based institution and a cornerstone of local support in Blackpool.
