Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte, Braga (must see)

The Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte is one of the most renowned pilgrimage sites and architectural gems in the country. This magnificent sanctuary, perched atop a lush hillside, combines religious significance with breathtaking Baroque architecture and beautifully landscaped gardens.

The sanctuary has a long history, dating back to the late 14th century when a simple chapel was built on the hill. Situated on the slopes of Mount Espinho it offers panoramic views of the city of Braga and the surrounding countryside. The journey to the top involves climbing The Sacred Way (Escadaria do Bom Jesus) - a monumental Baroque staircase comprising 577 steps and adorned with religious symbols, fountains, and sculptures. Pilgrims ascend these steps, pausing to reflect and pray at various landings along the way.

At the top of the hill stands the impressive Bom Jesus Basilica. This Baroque masterpiece features intricate architecture, gilded altars, and ornate decorations. The interior is equally stunning, with a richly adorned nave and breathtaking ceiling artwork.

Near the basilica, visitors can find a natural spring believed to have healing properties. Pilgrims often collect water from this spring as they seek spiritual and physical renewal.
