Santa Maria della Vittoria (Basilica of Saint Mary of Victory), Rome
The Basilica of Saint Mary of Victory (Santa Maria della Vittoria) is a Catholic minor basilica and Discalced Carmelite church. Built in the early 17th century, it is most renowned for housing Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s celebrated Baroque sculpture The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa. The church is the only structure entirely designed and completed by the noted early Baroque architect Carlo Maderno, though its elegant façade-completed between 1624 and 1626-was executed by Giovanni Battista Soria, drawing clear inspiration from Maderno’s nearby Santa Susanna. Despite suffering damage from a fire in 1833, the church was restored, preserving its artistic legacy.
Inside, the basilica features a single, broad nave beneath a low segmental vault, adorned with colossal Corinthian pilasters and richly gilded details. The vault itself was frescoed in 1675 by Giovanni Domenico Cerrini, who depicted triumphant religious themes such as The Virgin Mary Triumphing over Heresy and The Fall of the Rebel Angels. Numerous chapels along the nave house valuable artworks and sculptures, including The Dream of Joseph by Domenico Guidi and a funerary monument to Cardinal Berlinghiero Gessi. The church also contains works by painters such as Guercino, Domenichino, and Nicolas Lorrain, and serves as the final resting place of Saint Victoria, whose relics are enshrined within.
The Cornaro Chapel is the true highlight of the basilica, commissioned by Cardinal Federico Cornaro and brought to life by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Its centerpiece, The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa, is considered one of the greatest masterpieces of Baroque sculpture. Bernini captures a moment described in Saint Teresa of Ávila’s autobiography, where she experiences a divine vision of an angel piercing her heart with a flaming golden arrow. The sculpture is famous for its emotional intensity and dramatic realism, with Saint Teresa depicted in a state of rapturous spiritual ecstasy. The work's sensual overtones sparked controversy during and after Bernini's lifetime, as critics accused the piece of blurring the line between religious fervor and physical pleasure.
