Santuario de Guadalupe (Sanctuary of Our Lady of Guadalupe), Guatemala City
Sanctuary of Our Lady of Guadalupe is one of the city's most important religious and architectural landmarks. Initially built in 1793 on land donated by the influential Jáuregui family, the sanctuary was dedicated to the veneration of the Virgin of Guadalupe. The current majestic church was constructed beginning in 1930 and consecrated in 1952, under the guidance of monsignor Julio Martínez Flores and rector José Ángel Montenegro.
The sanctuary stands out for its graceful blend of neoclassical and baroque elements. From its facade crowned by twin towers and a blue-tiled dome to the richly decorated interior. Inside, you’ll encounter an impressive 2.8-meter-high statue of the Virgen de Guadalupe by Esteban Rojas González, adorned with a crown of gold and silver and illuminated by 168 donor-inscribed rays. Visitors can also admire vivid frescoes, wooden carvings, religious canvases, and a grand pipe organ-an uncommon sight in the city's churches.
December 12th each year marks a highlight at the sanctuary, as thousands flock here to honor the patroness, often accompanied by children dressed in traditional Mayan attire. Festivities include novenas, midnight serenades of “The Little Mornings” mariachi performances, and a night time candlelit procession.
