Saxen Monument Lange Voorhout, Hague

The monument in Lange Voorhout, The Hague, is dedicated to Prince Bernhard of Saxen-Weimar-Eisenach (1792-1862), a significant Dutch military and cultural figure. This monument recognizes his military skills and his support for arts and sciences.

Prince Bernhard, son of Grand Duke Karl August, was well-educated and later made notable contributions in literature. He started his military career at 14, volunteering in the Jena battle at Hohenlohe. He then joined the Rhine Confederation with his father and served as Major of the General Staff in the 1809 campaign.

Established in 1866, the monument acknowledges Prince Bernhard's military feats and his impact on the Netherlands. He played key roles in the 1815 Quatre-Bras and Waterloo battles, where his leadership as a colonel was vital. After these victories, he became a major general.

Designed by architect Hugo Vogel, the monument features an obelisk, reflecting Vogel's love for classicism, an architectural style based on classical antiquity.

The sandstone obelisk is adorned with bronze elements like flags, weapons, a wreath, and a helmet, symbolizing the duke's status as a distinguished military leader. A bronze medallion of the duke, by painter and sculptor Johan Koelman, is accompanied by laurel wreaths, signifying victory.

The monument also has inscriptions highlighting Prince Bernhard's legacy as a "Protector of art and science" and a "Courageous and policy-minded war leader, steadfastly loyal to the Netherlands," encapsulating his roles as a military commander, arts patron, and national servant.
