Sayles Hall, Providence

Sayles Hall is a Romanesque-style building on the Brown University campus, completed in 1881. It was funded by industrialist William F. Sayles as a memorial to his son, William Clark Sayles, a student who died in 1876. Architect Alpheus C. Morse designed the hall for lectures, academic meetings and large gatherings. For many years, it also served as the university’s principal chapel and largest assembly space.

The exterior combines rough-faced red granite with reddish-brown stone trim. Its front section features a central tower, a hipped roof and dormer windows, while the long rear section contains the main auditorium beneath a broad gabled roof. Inside, visitors can see an extensive portrait collection depicting university presidents, faculty members and benefactors, including figures connected with important changes in the institution’s history.

A major feature is the Hutchings-Votey pipe organ, installed in 1903 as a memorial gift from alumnus Lucian Sharpe. The instrument has more than 3,000 pipes and occupies the gallery above the hall’s entrance. It remains the largest surviving organ of its type and is played during concerts, ceremonial gatherings and the university’s traditional midnight Halloween recital.
