Scarab Club, Detroit
The Scarab Club, established in 1907, is one of Michigan's oldest arts organizations. Originally named the Hopkin Club after marine painter Robert Hopkin, it was renamed in 1913 to symbolize its commitment to the perpetual renewal of the arts in Detroit.
Located on Farnsworth Street in Detroit's Cultural Center Historic District, the club is adjacent to the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Detroit Science Center. The clubhouse, designed by architect and member Lancelot Sukert, opened on October 5, 1928, and is an example of Arts and Crafts architecture. The building features Pewabic Pottery tiles, including a ceramic scarab emblem over the front entrance designed by sculptor Horace Colby.
The interior includes galleries, lounges, and six working artist studios. Notably, the second-floor lounge has ceiling beams painted by members in 1928, which have been signed by over 230 artists, including Diego Rivera, Norman Rockwell, Marshall Fredericks, and Pablo Davis. The lounge also contains a fireplace with a mural depicting different levels of club membership, painted by Paul Honoré.
The Scarab Club was designated a Michigan State Historic Site in 1974 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, recognizing its significant role in the cultural history of the state and the nation.
