Schlossberg (Castle Hill), Freiburg

Schlossberg (Castle Hill), Freiburg

The Castle Hill stands as a majestic, tree-clad hill reaching an elevation of 456 meters (1,496 feet). Nestled to the east of Freiburg's Old Town, this natural wonder is an integral part of the expansive Black Forest landscape.

Throughout its storied history, the Schlossberg has been home to fortified structures dating back to the 11th century. Evidences of these ancient constructions still grace the hillside, offering a glimpse into the past. In recent years, a dedicated board of trustees has diligently worked to unveil the Schlossberg's historical significance, making the overgrown remains of these fortifications accessible to curious visitors.

Atop the Schlossberg, a notable attraction awaits: the Castle Hill Tower. Erected in 2002 as a project initiated by the board of trustees, this tower provides a truly unique vantage point, affording panoramic views that encompass the entire town of Freiburg and its picturesque surroundings. It stands as a modern marvel nestled within the ancient landscape.

The Burghaldering, or Motte Ring, encircles the hill at a mid-level altitude, offering excellent vistas of the city, particularly from the Kanonenplatz, which lies just above the historic city center. The Burghaldering serves as both a hiking trail and a forest road, free from motorized traffic. Accessible by foot, car, and, since July 2008, the new Schlossbergbahn-a funicular railway that replaced the old Schlossberg cable railway-it provides an enchanting route to explore the hill's beauty.
