Schumann House, Bonn
The Schumann House, the former residence and final home of composer Robert Schumann was built around 1790 as a neoclassical summer house-later converted into a private psychiatric clinic by Dr. Franz Richarz. It was here that Schumann spent his last years from 1854 until his death in 1856. Today, the house stands as both a solemn memorial and a museum, where visitors can trace the final chapter of one of Romanticism’s greatest composers.
Inside, the upper floor houses the compelling Schumann memorial rooms. Though the original furnishings no longer remain, these rooms present facsimile letters, personal documents, family portraits and musical manuscripts of Robert and his wife Clara Schumann, along with memorabilia from contemporaries like the composer Johannes Brahms and violinist Joseph Joachim. Visitors can step into Schumann’s sickroom, once a bright “patients’ room” overlooking the Rhineland.
Beyond its memorial function, the Schumann House doubles as Bonn’s municipal music library, offering an impressive archive of roughly 50 000 music scores, books, and recordings. The building isn't just a static museum-the library buzzes with quiet study, borrowing activities, and the gentle turning of pages. The main reading room also serves as an intimate concert space during events like the Bonn Schumann Festival.
