Scuola Grande di San Marco (Great School of St. Mark), Venice
With its intricate entrance and the presence of a statue depicting Saint Mark, it's easy to mistake the Great School ("Scuola Grande") for a church. However, this refined palazzo facing the Giovanni e Paolo square is not a religious edifice. Instead, it served as the Venetian equivalent of a social club, established by philanthropists in the 13th century, and functioned as an elegant clubhouse until Napoleon abolished fraternal organizations in the city.
Since its reopening in 2013, the façade of the Great School has captivated visitors with its intricate details. Notable features include the skillful use of perspective, elaborate stonework that sets Venetian Renaissance architecture apart from Florentine and Roman styles, and an abundance of lion motifs. The grand entrance on the left leads to a reception hall, while the more modest doorway on the right provides access to the lodging area, typically closed to the public.
Although the interior was stripped of artwork after the dissolution of the brotherhood, the two main rooms on the upper floor have been meticulously restored to their former opulence. Sala Capitolare houses a collection of medical artifacts and several paintings by Tintoretto depicting the life of Saint Mark, while in the adjacent Sala dell'Albergo, the walls are dedicated to the patron saint as well. Both rooms boast magnificent engraved ceilings.
The square in front of the Scuola Grande di San Marco is one of the most pleasant spots in the Castello district and invites visitors to linger. Café tables line the southern edge of the square, offering a delightful place to relax. As you explore, you will also encounter a bronze equestrian statue of a local mercenary. And when the time calls for a sweet treat, gelato can be readily enjoyed at nearby establishments.

Although most experts agree that the Venetian lagoon emerged nearly 6,000 years ago, the area of today's Venice remained mostly uninhabited, except for a small population of fishermen, up until the 5th century AD when the hordes of Gothic barbarians, looting their way into Rome, drove many a people away from their homes on the mainland to take refuge on the coastal Venetian islands.
