Shankar International Dolls Museum, Delhi

Shankar International Dolls Museum, Delhi

The Dolls Museum in New Delhi is a renowned institution that boasts an extensive collection of dolls from all corners of the world. Established in 1965 by the celebrated political cartoonist, K. Shankar Pillai, the museum began with a modest assemblage of a thousand dolls. The inauguration, graced by former President of India, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, unveiled only 500 dolls. However, over the years, the collection has flourished, thanks to generous gifts, and it now proudly houses over 6,500 exhibits from nearly 85 countries, lending it an international appeal.

The museum, sprawling over 5,184.5 square feet (481.66 square meters), holds two distinct sections of dolls. One section features dolls gathered from western countries like the UK, USA, Australia, New Zealand, and the Commonwealth of Independent States. The other section showcases dolls from various Asian, Latin American, and African countries, including India.

Among the main attractions are 150 types of Indian costume dolls meticulously crafted at the museum's own workshop, nestled within its premises. These artisans skillfully create a symphony of physical features, costumes, and ornaments, making the dolls a visual delight. The pageant includes characters from India's unique classical dance form, Kathakali, adorned in their opulent attire.

Over the years, the Dolls Museum has evolved into a true emblem of cultural exchange, celebrating the world's diversity through the charming art of doll-making.
