Crafts Museum, Delhi

The National Crafts Museum in New Delhi, founded in 1956, stands as one of India's largest and most significant institutions dedicated to preserving traditional arts and crafts. The museum took shape gradually over three decades, commencing in the 1950s and 60s. Its primary vision was to create an ethnographic space where artisans from all corners of India could gather to safeguard and perpetuate their diverse crafts.

Over the years, the museum's collection grew significantly. The current structure, designed by architect Charles Correa between 1975 and 1990, elegantly combines traditional and modern architectural styles. It now holds over 35,000 rare and distinctive pieces, showcasing India's enduring craftsmanship, including captivating works in painting, embroidery, textiles, clay, stone, wood, and more.

The museum displays diverse facets of India's heritage, including Tribal Crafts, Courtly Crafts, Textiles, and Popular Culture. It houses precious artifacts like the Bhoota Collection, antique Kashmiri 'dushalas,' exquisite Chamba handkerchiefs, rare brocade and Baluchari saris, intricate Kutch embroidery, and precious metal jewelry.

Additionally, the museum boasts a sprawling village complex, spanning 5 acres, with 15 meticulously crafted structures representing rural dwellings, courtyards, and shrines from diverse Indian states. These exhibits offer an intimate glimpse into the everyday lives of the country's various communities.

Beyond its rich collection, the National Crafts Museum provides invaluable resources for research and documentation. A reference library, conservation, and photo laboratories, as well as an auditorium, further enhance its standing as a hub of knowledge and cultural preservation.
