Shaw Center for the Arts, Baton Rouge

Shaw Center for the Arts, Baton Rouge

The Shaw Center for the Arts opened in 2005 to bring different art groups together in one building. It supports visual and performing arts and gives visitors a simple way to explore both in one visit. Set along the riverfront, it was part of a plan to make the area more active. The building has received several design awards, including a 2008 national honor from the American Institute of Architects and multiple awards in 2005.

Inside, there are galleries, a theater, and creative spaces. The LSU Museum of Art is one of the main parts of the center, showing works from different time periods, including both older and modern pieces. Another key space is the Manship Theatre, where visitors can watch films, concerts, dance shows, and talks. Events often include both local performers and artists from outside the region.

The building has a simple modern design, with open spaces and large windows that bring in natural light. A central atrium links the different floors, so it is easy to move around. There are also outdoor terraces with views of the river. Throughout the year, the center offers workshops, school programs, and public events, so there is usually something happening beyond the regular exhibitions.
