First Presbyterian Church, Birmingham
First Presbyterian Church (FPC), located on 4th Avenue North, holds a special place in Birmingham’s history as one of the city’s earliest congregations. Originally founded in 1858 in Elyton (an area that would later become part of Birmingham), the church officially moved to its current site in 1872. That same year, the original wooden building was dismantled and reassembled at the corner of 21st Street and 4th Avenue North-becoming the very first church building in the newly established city of Birmingham.
The current sanctuary, a striking example of Victorian Gothic architecture with its red brick façade and pointed arches, was constructed in 1888 to accommodate the growing congregation. Over the years, the church underwent several enhancements, including the installation of the Rushton Memorial Carillon in 1924. Made up of 37 bells cast in England, this impressive instrument was the first carillon in Birmingham and only the third in the United States. It continues to ring out over the city each Sunday at noon and during special events.
In recognition of its architectural and historical significance, First Presbyterian Church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. It is an active member of the Presbytery of Sheppards & Lapsley and remains deeply engaged in the spiritual and social life of the community.
Known affectionately as the "First Family," the congregation embraces inclusivity, welcoming all people regardless of race, class, gender, sexual orientation, or faith tradition. Through worship, service, and community outreach, First Presbyterian continues its mission to embody Christ’s love at the heart of Birmingham.
