St. George in the Meadows, Nottingham

Saint George in the Meadows is a Grade II listed Church of England parish church located in the Meadows area of Nottingham. Recognized by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport for its special architectural and historical significance, the church reflects over five decades of careful expansion and craftsmanship.

The church’s foundation stone was laid in 1887 by MP Henry Smith Wright, and the nave-designed by local architect Richard Charles Sutton-was consecrated the following year by Bishop Edward Trollope. Over time, the church was enhanced with a chancel by renowned Gothic Revival architect George Frederick Bodley, consecrated in 1898, and a Lady Chapel designed by Cecil Greenwood Hare, completed in 1915.

Saint George’s is notable for its rich collection of stained glass. The large west window, depicting Saint Michael and Saint George, was designed in 1927 by Burlison and Grylls and finally installed in 1938. The north aisle features six stained glass windows of English saints by Horace Turrell Hincks (1924–1934), while the Lady Chapel houses post-war works by Whitefriars (1948–49).

The church also contains a distinguished pipe organ built in 1895 by J. W. Walker & Sons Ltd. Originally located in the south aisle, it was relocated to a purpose-built chamber after the chancel’s completion. The organ case was also designed by Bodley, and its specification is listed in the National Pipe Organ Register.

Following the destruction of Saint John the Baptist’s Church, Leenside, during the Second World War, its parish was merged with Saint George’s. Today, the church supports the work of Forward in Faith and is under the pastoral care of the Bishop of Beverley within the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham.
