St. Kolumban Parish Church, Bregenz
St. Kolumban Parish Church was established in 1962, at a time when new housing areas required their own parish centres. The church was built between 1962 and 1966 and designed by Swiss architect Hans Burtscher. It reflects post-war modern church architecture in Vorarlberg. The parish is dedicated to Saint Columban, who stayed in the region around 610–612 AD, linking the modern community to its early Christian roots.
The architecture reflects the ideas of the time. Instead of decoration, the design relies on clear forms and honest materials such as exposed concrete and wood. This marked a clear break from the Baroque churches common in the Lake Constance region. Inside, the layout brings the congregation closer to the altar. This follows the liturgical movement and the reforms of the Second Vatican Council, which encouraged a more communal arrangement rather than a long, distant nave.
The interior remains simple, with the altar as the central focus. Light enters through large windows, softening the concrete surfaces and creating a calm setting. Today, the church continues to host regular services and parish events, serving as both a spiritual and social centre for the surrounding neighbourhood.
