Villa Liebenstein, Bregenz
Villa Liebenstein was built during the Gründerzeit period, probably in the 1870s, although some sources suggest a date closer to 1880. It dates from a time when railway connections and steamship traffic on Lake Constance brought rapid growth and new prosperity. The villa is linked to Freiherr Gustav Adolf von Liebenstein, an Imperial-Royal lieutenant and landowner, who is regarded as its original builder and first owner. Houses of this type were designed as representative year-round residences for the upper class, reflecting status and stability.
The villa is attributed to architect Johann Anton Tscharner. It reflects Late Historicism with Neo-Baroque elements, featuring eight window axes and a mansard hip roof that shapes its silhouette. Later renovations by Ziegler in 1915 and Palmer in 1922 preserved its main features and overall character.
Over time, the villa had several uses. In 1880, it housed a commercial school under Director Alwin Hauser, and around 1910 it was owned by the Schoeller family. After the Second World War, French occupation forces used it. Since 1982, it has been city-owned and serves as the Bregenz Music School. Listed as a protected monument, it reflects late 19th-century residential architecture.
