St. Mary of Mercy Church, Pittsburgh

Saint Mary of Mercy was established in 1870, following the purchase of a house in September 1868 that was converted into a chapel named Our Lady of Consolation, specifically for Irish residents living in the Point area. Initially, this chapel functioned as a mission affiliated with Saint Paul Cathedral. However, in 1870, Saint Mary became an independent parish due to its growing congregation, necessitating a larger space.

On May 12, 1876, the parish purchased the Ames Methodist Episcopal Church located at the corner of Third Avenue and Ferry Street. Following renovations, the church was rededicated on September 24, 1876, and given the name Saint Mary of Mercy.

Despite these efforts, the church still couldn't accommodate the expanding congregation. Consequently, in 1893, a new church was built and dedicated on May 28, 1893, at the same location as the current church. This church served the parishioners for forty years until the early 1930s when structural issues and limited space prompted the construction of a new church. The final Mass in the old church took place on May 22, 1935.

Subsequently, the old church was demolished, and the current Saint Mary of Mercy was constructed on the same site. On October 25, 1936, the new church, located at the corner of Stanwix Street and the Boulevard of the Allies, was dedicated and remains in use to this day.
