St. Mary & St. Nicholas Church, Salisbury

Built between 1841 and 1845, St. Mary & St. Nicholas Church is one of England's finest examples of Victorian Romanesque Revival architecture. It was commissioned by Sidney Herbert and his mother, Catherine Woronzow, and designed by Thomas Henry Wyatt and David Brandon. Inspired by northern Italian basilicas, it has a detached 33-metre campanile, rounded arches, patterned stonework, and a rare north-south layout. The project cost around £20,000, an enormous investment in the 1840s.

The richly decorated interior brings together Victorian craftsmanship and historic treasures collected from across Europe. Two black marble columns came from a Roman temple at Porto Venere, while parts of the Capocci Shrine came from Saint Mary Major in Rome. The church also has rare medieval French stained glass and Byzantine-style mosaics that enrich the chancel.

Today, the Grade I listed church remains an active parish church while welcoming visitors interested in architecture, history, and art. Linked to the Pembroke estate, it reflects its founders’ interest in European craftsmanship. Its combination of Italian-inspired design, medieval artworks, and Victorian innovation makes it one of the most distinctive historic churches in the region.
