Wilton Carpet Factory, Salisbury

The Wilton Carpet Factory is linked to one of Britain’s oldest carpet-making traditions. Carpet production in Wilton began in the early 18th century, when skilled weavers helped establish the town as a centre of textile craftsmanship. The “Wilton weave” became known for its durability, close texture, and detailed patterns, while the factory later also absorbed equipment linked to Axminster weaving, bringing two major carpet traditions together on one site.

In the 1870s, William Morris commissioned the factory to produce some of his intricate Arts and Crafts carpet designs, relying on its ability to handle dense yarn work and complex organic patterns. During the Second World War, ordinary carpet production slowed, and the factory supported the war effort through work such as blanket laundering and camouflage net making.

The factory nearly closed in 1995, but a small group of employees bought the business and restarted production within days. Its first new order came from the Earl of Pembroke for carpets at Wilton House, adding another chapter to the factory’s long local connection. Today, Wilton carpets are still valued for hotels, historic interiors, and classic vehicle restorations, including luxury marques such as Rolls-Royce and Bentley.
