Wilton Village, Salisbury

Wilton is a historic market town with roots going back more than a thousand years. It was once an important Anglo-Saxon settlement and served as the ancient county town of Wiltshire before Salisbury became the main regional centre. Its history is closely linked with Wilton Abbey, one of medieval England’s wealthy Benedictine nunneries, and later with Wilton House, built on the former abbey site after the Dissolution of the Monasteries.

The town has a calm, traditional character, with historic buildings, independent shops, cafés, and old brick, stone, and timber-framed houses. One of its most notable landmarks is the Church of St Mary and St Nicholas, built in the 1840s. Its Italianate design, tall campanile, mosaics, and marble decoration make it one of the most distinctive churches in the area.

Wilton is also known for its carpet-making heritage. In the 18th century, French Huguenot weavers helped introduce advanced weaving techniques, creating a craft tradition that made the town famous. Today, visitors can explore its historic streets, enjoy its small-town atmosphere, and discover strong links to English history, architecture, and traditional craftsmanship.
