St. Thomas' Church, Salisbury

St. Thomas' Church is one of the oldest parish churches in the area, founded in the early 13th century to serve the growing population after construction of the nearby cathedral began. Although much of the present building dates from the 14th and 15th centuries, it preserves elements from its earliest years and reflects centuries of continuous worship. The church remains an active parish while welcoming visitors interested in local history, architecture, and art.

Built of flint and limestone, the church blends Early English and Perpendicular Gothic styles, with a tower, traceried windows, carved woodwork, monuments, and stained glass. The church is best known for its medieval Doom painting above the chancel arch, showing moral warnings and King Henry VI among the saved. During later rebuilding, one nave pillar was left out to give a clearer view of the painting and high altar.

Another highlight is the impressive timber roof, decorated with around 250 carved angels, prophets, and saints, many holding musical instruments or heraldic shields linked to local guilds. Visitors can also see faint medieval graffiti, including protective "witch marks" on some pillars. The church still hosts services, concerts, and cultural events.
