Steenstraat (Stone Street), Bruges

Stone Street is one of the principal shopping streets in the historic center of Brugge. It is also one of Brugge’s oldest streets. Its name is generally associated with its early stone paving, which distinguished it from roads that were still surfaced with earth or sand. It formed an important route through the developing medieval city, connecting the commercial center around the Markt with the western approaches to Brugge.

The street should not, however, be confused with the ancient Zandstraat. That Roman-era road connected settlements including Oudenburg, Brugge, and Aardenburg, but its precise route through medieval Brugge remains uncertain. Historical research specifically indicates that it did not follow the present Stone Street.

During the Middle Ages and early modern period, Stone Street was associated with several powerful craft guilds. Guild houses belonging to bakers, masons, carpenters, joiners, and shoemakers once stood along the street. A particularly notable survivor is De Grote Vos at number 25, the former masons’ guild house. Its elaborate late-Renaissance gable dates from 1625 and still provides a glimpse of the street’s historic appearance.

Today, Stone Street is lined primarily with international fashion chains, Belgian retailers, chocolate shops, cafés, and other commercial businesses. Its character is livelier and more modern than that of Brugge’s quieter canal-side lanes, although historic façades and architectural details remain visible above many of the shopfronts.

At the southwestern end of the street stands Saint Salvator’s Cathedral, Brugge’s oldest parish church. Developed mainly between the 12th and 15th centuries, it contains medieval tombs, tapestries, paintings, and other works of religious art.
